Modifying a WinUAE Configuration

TOPIC

Q: How can I modify one of the default WinUAE emulation configurations?

DISCUSSION

A: The Amiga Forever launcher window, which provides one-click access to Amiga configurations such as "Workbench 1.3" and "Workbench 3.X", also includes a "WinUAE Configuration" entry which makes it possible to change the preconfigured settings.

To modify an existing configuration:

  • Open Start/Programs/Cloanto/Amiga Forever/Launcher
  • Click "WinUAE Configuration"
  • In the Configurations tab, select the desired configuration and click Load
  • Change the desired settings
  • Click OK to run the emulation without saving the changes, or
  • Go back to the Configurations tab, select the configuration you wish to overwrite (or type a new name) and click Save

Typical settings you may want to modify include:

  • RAM: increase Zorro III Fast RAM available to the emulation
  • CPU: set the JIT cache size to 0 in the CPU tab to disable JIT, which results in lower speed and increased compatibility
  • Display: change the Full screen and Full screen RTG settings to run the emulation in a window rather than in full screen
  • Chipset: enable AGA for limited AGA support
  • Hard drives: mount or remove directories and hardfiles
  • Floppies: select a floppy disk image file to boot from it

If you prefer to manually view and modify the WinUAE settings files you can access them inside the Configurations subdirectory of the WinUAE data directory (by default, this is "WinUAE/Configurations", inside "Amiga Files"). To edit the files with Notepad right-click the desired .uae file, select Open With... Notepad.
